A former Maryland congressman and onetime leader of the NAACP has helped local residents celebrate the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. Kweisi Mfume was the main speaker during an annual ceremony that highlights the struggle for civil rights. The organizers of the Sunday eevent also honored retired University of Virginia history professor Paul Gaston (pictured) by giving him the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Award. Gaston was involved in several sit-ins nearly 50 years ago that helped lead to the desegregation of local restaurants.
