Legislation that would let undocumented immigrants qualify for in-state college tuition has cleared the House of Delegates Education Committee. Arlington Democrat Alfonso Lopez (pictured) has applauded a Thursday vote that endorsed the measure. Lopez was part of a 17-4 vote majority, with Republicans Steve Landes of Augusta County and Dickie Bell of Staunton providing two of the no votes. A similar piece of legislation died on an 8-7 vote in the Senate Education and Health Committee, and one of the opponents was Republican Senator Tom Garrett of Louisa County.
