Plug Aways for Monday January 23rd:

Blue Star Families of Central Virginia meets the third Thursday of each month at 6:30pm at the Amercian Legion building near the intersection of Rt. 22 and Rt. 250.  This month they'll be preparing the Operation Warm Hearts packing that they'll send 2/16.  For more information visit their website  here.

First Baptist Church on Park Street is holding a blood drive today from 1pm until 7pm in the Fellowship Hall.  Pam Melampy, who passed away last week, had been organizing this blood drive in honor of her nephew.  It will now be in honor of both her and her nephew.

JABA's Soup for Seniors canned food drive runs through this week.  They are collecting non-perishable, low sodium canned soups, meats, sauces and food which will be distributed to low-income elderly citizens around the area.  They are collecting at JABA and at a number of other places.  For a complete list of donation sites call JABA  at 817-5222.  They are also looking for volunteers to help sort and shelve the collections Monday 1/16 at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The 6th Annual Grace Tinsley Scholarship Dinner is this Saturday (1/14) from 7pm-10pm at the Elk's Club.  Tickets are $30 at the door with all proceeds going to fund scholarships for local high school students in need.  Click here for more info.

The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville's annual Christmas tree and wreath sale runs until this Thursday.  They're in the parking lot at Seminole Square shopping center and are open for business 2pm-8pm.  Tree prices range from $45-$100.  All proceeds benefit various Kiwanis projects.  Visit them online by clicking here

Plug Aways for Monday November 28th:

The Kiwanis Club of Charlottesville's annual Christmas tree and wreath sale is underway.  They're in the parking lot at Seminole Square shopping center until they sell out or until 12/22 (whichever comes first!)  They are open for business 2pm-8pm weekdays and 11am-8pm on Saturdays and Sundays with trees ranging from $45-$100.  All proceeds benefit various Kiwanis projects.  Visit them online by clicking here

Blue Star Families of Central Virginia was able to pack 83 boxes for local service members at their holiday packing.  They won't have their regular meeting in December but will have a holiday social at 6pm on 12/15.  For more information visit their website  here.

The Charlottesville Municipal Band holds their 89th Annual Holiday Concert Sunday December 11th at 3:30pm at the MLK Performing Arts Center at Charlottesville High School.  Admission is free but they ask that you bring a donation of canned or non-perishable food.  Visit the Municipal Band online here.

Tandem Friends School is taking their production of "Godspell Jr." on the road to help some local nonprofit groups.  They'll perform at Play On! Plug Aways for Monday July 18th:

Westhaven Community Day is Saturday August 6th.  Starting at 10am there will be free youth sports physicals for anyone participating in youth sports.  A parent must accompany the child.  There will also be over 100 exhibitors, a dunking booth, performances by community groups (from 1pm-4pm) and bingo after the physicals in the Westhaven Community Center.  Volunteers are needed for the free physicals (nurses, office workers, etc) and they also need prize donations.  For more information, to volunteer or to donate call 971-1200.

The 28th Annual Kiwanis Independence Day 5K is Monday, July 4th starting near the Lighthouse Worship Center in Forest Lakes.  Registration begins at 6:30am and the race starts at 7:30am.  Early registration is $25 for Charlottesville Track Club members, $26 for non-members and $20 for students.  It's $30 to register on race day.  Click here for all of the info.

The Crozet Community Association is holding a number of events for the 4th of July weekend to benefit the Crozet pool dome project.  Friday night (7/1) they are holding a swing dance at Crozet Park.  Tickets are $20 for individuals and $35 for couples.  Saturday, the Crozet 4th of July Parade begins at 4pm.  The parade ends at Crozet Park where they'll have two bands, a charity softball game and lots of cool stuff for kids to do.  The night concludes with fireworks at 9:30pm.  They are asking for a $5 donation per car to benefit the pool dome project.  Click here for all of the details.

Wordplay is Charlottesville’s original live game show and major fund raiser for LVCA. The Law Enforcement Torch Run for the Special Olympics is this Friday and they are following a different route this year.  Law enforcement officers from all over our area will leave the Downtown Amphitheater around 10am Friday and run the torch down Ridge-McIntire to the 5th Street County Office Building.  Then, Friday night they will be the special guest servers at Outback Steakhouse, raising money and awareness for the Special Olympics, which begin Friday night in Richmond.

The Charlottesville Area Tennis Association will hold a Cardio Tennis Event as part of the Boyd Tinsley Women’s Tournament, this Thursday (April 30th) from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at the Boar’s Head Sports Club.  Feisal Hassan, a National Trainer for the Tennis Industry Association’s Cardio Tennis Initiative, will lead this heart-pumping fitness event.
