A City Council candidate says he's taking the unusual step of endorsing an opponent in the race. Independent Bob Fenwick (pictured) says voters should elect him and Democrat Dede Smith. Fenwick says he, Smith and Mayor Dave Norris share similar views. Fenwick says the Democrats are split between what he calls the old line and the progressives. Fenwick says Norris needs the 3-2 majority that he and Smith would provide to help the mayor achieve his goals. Dede Smith issued a statement saying she's flattered with the endorsement but will not be doing the same for Fenwick. Smith says she stands by her Democratic ticket-mates and supports Satyendra Huja and Kathy Galvin. City Democratic co-chair Jim Nix says Fenwick's endorsement is an obvious attempt to divide the Democratic Party.
