City Councilors are exploring uses for roughly $3.8 million in excess funds from the last fiscal year. Finance Director Bernard Wray (pictured) says the meals, lodging and sales tax revenues were higher than expected during the 12-month period that ended June 30th. The same trend was evident in the city's parking garage revenues. City Manager Maurice Jones is encouraging the councilors to put $3.1 million into a contingency fund that deals with capital projects. His suggestions include funneling a total of roughly $675,000 into assorted equipment and repair projects that city departments are eager to get. One budget item that councilors have already endorsed calls for $80,000 to hire ambassadors for the Downtown Mall area. City residents and property owners can weigh in after the councilors convene their next meeting at 7 p.m. Monday.
