The number of H1N1 flu cases among college and university students may have peaked in our region. That's according to the American College Health Association. As of 11am Friday, the UVA Student Health Center's Information Page had reported 419 cases of flu-like illness since the fall semester began. In the past week, the nationwide attack rate was 19.2 cases per 10,000 students. That is two percent higher than last week's rate. President of the American College Health Association Dr. James Turner explained that flu outbreaks come in waves. He predicted that many outbreaks will have waned significantly by the time H1N1 vaccine becomes widely available. Turner says the next two to three months are a critical time for college students to receive vaccinations before the next wave starts this winter.
