VDOT will launch a bridge replacement project next week in the Rucker's Run area of Nelson County. The agency will close Route 654 next Monday between Phoenix Road and Variety Mills Road. That will make it easier to build a replacement bridge over Rucker's Run. Route 654 will be closed for 90 days, and VDOT has established a detour that includes Variety Mills Road, North Powell's Island Road, and Phoenix Road. VDOT is also planning to close the bridge on Route 712 during the second week of August. It will also create a temporary bridge near the closed structure. Drivers will cope with that arrangement through early November.
